Exercise May Protect DNA, Reduce Heart Disease Risk

One of the top reasons we have health issues as we age is due to DNA damage. Now, a new study has found that exercise may help to protect your DNA, including the cells that line the blood vessels, which may help to reduce the risk of heart disease.

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Utah's Department of Internal Medicine focused on 15 male mice over four weeks. The mice were placed in a cage with a running wheel and their daily running distances were categorized as high, moderate, or low.

After four weeks, tissue samples were taken from the aortas of the mice, which is the artery that transports blood from the heart to the circulatory system. The researchers specifically examined the endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells within the vessel walls, assessing DNA damage and how well the telomeres (the protective “end caps” of the DNA) were functioning.

The results revealed that mice who engaged in more physical activity had lower levels of DNA damage and better-functioning telomeres within the endothelial cells. However, this effect was not observed in the vascular smooth muscle cells. Essentially, the study found that the mice who exercised the most showed the most favorable outcomes, shedding light on the potential benefits of exercise in protecting DNA and reducing the risk of heart disease.

Dental Health May Affect Colorectal Cancer Risk

Research suggests the state of one's mouth could influence the likelihood of developing colorectal cancer. Studies have found correlations between poor oral health, including gum disease and tooth loss, and an increased risk of colorectal cancer.

This association is thought to be linked to the presence of harmful bacteria in the mouth, which can enter the bloodstream and potentially contribute to inflammation and other processes associated with cancer development. Plus, researchers have identified specific bacteria, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum, that are present in both gum disease and colorectal tumors.

These findings suggest a potential direct link between oral bacteria and colorectal cancer. Plus, individuals with certain genetic variations related to immune function may be more susceptible to the harmful effects of oral bacteria, further increasing their risk of colorectal cancer.

Improving oral hygiene and maintaining good dental health habits may help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups can help prevent gum disease and reduce the levels of harmful bacteria in the mouth. Plus, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, along with avoiding tobacco use, can contribute to overall health and potentially lower the risk of colorectal cancer.

8 Tips for Exercising When You Don’t Feel Like It

Don’t feel like working out? Low motivation is a common experience, even among fitness professionals. Intrinsic motivation, driven by the enjoyment of the activity itself rather than external rewards, is crucial for sustaining long-term exercise habits. When you don’t feel like working out, start with something easy (even tying your shoes!), give yourself a guilt-free day off, and focus on the immediate payoffs–like more energy and an improved mood. Alcohol and Your Teeth: Protect Them While Drinking

You know drinking alcohol can affect your heart, immune system, and memory, and even raise your cancer risk. But did you know it can also affect your teeth? According to a cosmetic dentist, alcohol can cause dry mouth by reducing saliva, which makes your mouth more acidic and can set the stage for dental decay. For your teeth and overall health, experts advise “drinking mindfully” and following it up with good dental hygiene. (More)

Top Potassium Foods (Are You Getting Enough?)

Potassium is a vital mineral that helps to regulate your blood pressure, reduce the risk of a stroke, and support healthy bones. How much potassium do you need? The recommended daily dose is 3,400 mg daily for men and 2,600 daily for women. Good food sources of potassium include lentils, acorn squash, apricots, spinach, bananas, potatoes, prunes, and kidney beans. Always talk to your doctor to determine what is most appropriate for your health needs. (More)

After age 50, men are more at risk of having an enlarged prostate gland—called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH for short. Symptoms of BPH can include sluggish urine flow, nighttime wakings to urinate, difficulties emptying the bladder, or the dreaded need to run to the bathroom. While some men will require drug therapy or surgery, if your symptoms are mild, you may want to try these natural techniques to get relief. (More)

Many of us think of “fuzzy thinking” as something that happens as we get old. Yet, the truth is our brains begin to shrink starting in our thirties and forties. Your Skincare Routine May Be Making You Look Older

Retinol is a lab-made chemical derivative of vitamin A, and it’s one of the hottest ingredients in skincare right now.

But this trendy new chemical also has serious drawbacks that may actually CAUSE premature signs of aging.

For example, retinol can also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, and because one of the biggest accelerators for skin aging is sun damage, long-term use of retinol may do more harm than good for your skin.

The bottom line? IGNORE THE HYPE.

But retinol is just one of thousands of chemicals you might find on the shelves of your local skincare aisle, so how are you supposed to know which ones are safe (and which ones you actually DO want to use instead)?

That’s why you truly do not want to miss this completely free “ESSENTIAL Natural Secrets You Must Know to Achieve Your Healthiest, Youngest-Looking Skin” masterclass.
